Interesting
notes:
1.
Dad’s grandma Clara on his mom’s side didn’t pass away until 1920
shortly after mom & dad got married.
2.
Dad’s grandma Katherine on his dad’s side didn’t pass away until
1927 just about when Earl was born.
3.
Dad’s Grandma - Clara Bent was alive to
see the passing of her daughter Helen
Bent Hotze (Dad’s mom) at the young age of 28.
4.
Dad’s father’s name – John Kaeb Hotze came from his great
grandfather (John Kaeb) on his grandma’s side.
5.
I guess Dad couldn’t take the German spelling of the name Kaeb and
changed it to Kabe. I’m not sure what the story behind when & why he
decided to change it.
6. I believe it might have been at Aunt Katherine's (Gibson) wake that I remember seeing & meeting most of Dad's uncles - I believe they were all there - Will, Charlie, & Albert. I think Uncle Harry had already passed away but I don't have a year when he died. Of course Grandpa Hotze had already died (1946). I would guess this get together was around 1950 or so. I really have no recollection of them except at this party in the backyard at Gibby's home. I recall most of the Uncles being very gregarious and fun to be around. I would guess I may have only been around 10 to 12. If it was Katherine's wake, I wonder when she died? Does anyone besides myself have any recollection of this get together at the Gibson's house in Shrewsbury. I remember it was mostly held outdoors in the backyard.
7. I believe that that Uncle Harry sold his interest in the Hot-Z factory shortly after the World War I ended for over $100,000. Fortunately for Uncle Harry the business had just peaked and was on its way into a chasm when he sold his interest. He probably wound up being the richest of the two eldest Hotze brothers or for that matter any of the 5 brothers and 1 sister.
8. I guess Uncle Will, Charlie, & Albert never had any kids; at least I have never heard anyone speak of them if they did. I have since learned that Albert had a son named Albert -I believe that he is the one that collected miniature iron banks. Being that his father was born much later than Jay Kay, I suspect that he may have been 10 to 15 years younger than dad. They would have both been in the same Hotze generation. Albert was dad's first cousin along with Harry Huffington, & Katherine Huffington Gibson. I don't know if his Uncle Will & Aunt Lena or Uncle Charlie & Aunt Katherine ever had any kids.
9. I wonder if Grandma (Helen) had any brothers or sisters?
10. We are descendents of Henry Hotze but also we are descendents of the Kaeb's and Bent's. I wonder if there are any other descendents of the Kaeb's or Bent's.
11. I noticed from the picture that Bob provided to me of Uncle Harry and Grandpa Hotze that Uncle Harry was an exceptional dapper man. Rose pointed out that if you combined the features of their two faces you would have our dad's face.
